- Application [2024 edition] - International School of Volcanlogy : working on active volcanoes
-
The Université Clermont Auvergne (UCA) and the Italian Association of Volcanology (AIV), in collaboration with the Universities of Pisa and Turin, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the Laboratory of Experimental Geophysics at the University of Florence (LGS), and the Italian Civil Protection organize a new edition of the International School of Volcanology at the Aeolian Islands (Southern Italy) on June 15-23, 2024 with the following theme: “Working on active volcanoes: learning the tools of modern Volcanology - Field observations, data acquisition, reporting, and response”
The target of the International School will be PhD Students and Early Career Scientists, especially those with observatory experience (for a maximum of 20 participants).
The school is organized with short lectures and field applications. The school is strongly field-based, where lectures and discussions on volcano dynamics, and the use of the instruments, will be made in a hands-on manner rather than in theory. Multiparametric experiments and outcrop observations will be carried out during the school and used to support learning through implementation. The base of the school will be at Lipari, with measurement trips at Vulcano and Stromboli.
Funds are available to cover travel, registration and full board for up to five participants from UCA thanks to support from I-SITE and InVolc.
UCA applicants need to apply via the AIV website.Application deadline: February 20, 2024
Participant selection: March 20, 2024
Confirmation and program: April 20, 2024More informations about the application process here: https://www.aivulc.it/dettnews-international_school_of_volcanology_2024_first_circular/3_465/it/

- Wilman Navarette, Master 2 student in Earth, Planetary and Environmental Sciences, course Magmas and Volcanoes
-
Wilman Navarrete is an Ecuadorian national and a Master 2 student in Earth, Planetary and Environmental Sciences, Magmas and Volcanoes. From March 16 to 23, 2023, he could take part in the International Physical Volcanology Course in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, Spain, with the support of the InVolc Graduate Track. This field course was organized by Géosciences Barcelona (GEO3BCN - CSIC) and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).
Here is his experience:
"With the GT InVolc program at the Université Clermont Auvergne, I had the opportunity to take part in a physical volcanology school in Tenerife. For this second edition of the Tenerife Volcanology School 2023, it brought together PhD and Masters students from various countries around the world (Germany, Italy, UK, Spain, USA, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile and Brazil). We had the opportunity to observe, identify and characterize volcanic deposits. Each day was thought-provoking, with debates and group discussions.
The teacher's role was above all to advise and guide our observations and interpretations in the field. During our stay, we formed teams to explore, record and interpret the effusive and explosive eruptive history that has unfolded on the island of Tenerife over the last 12 million years.
We were able to learn about the volcanic monitoring system (thermal cameras and seismic network) at #volcan Teide. These are fundamental tools in modern volcanology, enabling us to better understand active magmatic systems and contextualize them in action plans in the event of a volcanic eruption. The aim of this approach is multi-faceted, namely the prevention of human casualties and the reduction of socio-economic, environmental and health impacts on the population."

- [2023 edition] Summer School: monitoring active volcanoes on Aeolian Islands
-
The aim of the school is to provide training in the monitoring of active volcanoes, the processing of field measurements and communication with the authorities (civil protection) and the public. The volcanoes of the Aeolian Islands present a variety of geological and human situations that lend themselves well to this training, with different eruptive regimes, tsunami risks and economic issues, all of which are historically attested.
Target audience: young scientists at doctorate or post-doctorate level, students or working in volcanological observatories. Twenty-five students from all over the world took part in the school, whose costs were entirely covered by the InVolc Graduate Track and the CAP 2025 I-SITE's CIR-4.
- [2023 edition] Workshop on the High-pressure mineral physics and magmatic petrology
-
This inaugural workshop aims at introducing high-pressure research to master and Ph.D. students covering various fields of science, including Earth and planetary sciences, materials science, physics, and chemistry. The participants will gain familiarity with available state-of-the-art methods and how they can be applied to their research.
The workshop comprises lectures covering the basic principles of high-pressure mineral physics and magmatic petrology and hands-on training on high-pressure techniques (piston cylinder, multi-anvil, and diamond anvil cell), in situ measurements (electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and elastic wave velocity), and sample characterization techniques (EPMA, Raman, FTIR, SEM-FIB).

Introduction
The Graduate Track program 'InVolc' aims to develop and support a research-integrated curriculum in the field of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University Clermont Auvergne (UCA). The Graduate Track 'InVolc' relies on the Master’s programs of the Observatoire de Physique du Globe de Clermont-Ferrand (OPGC), on the doctoral school of fundamental sciences (EDSF), on the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (LMV), and on the Laboratoire de Météorologie Physique (LaMP). To implement its program, the Graduate Track 'InVolc' has set up the following instruments:
- Scholarships delivered on the basis of academic excellence
- Visiting professors program
- Summer schools and workshops
- Incoming visitor program for young researchers in training (Master's and Doctorate levels)
- Support for linguistic transformation through a 'writing center' with peer tutoring
- Internship in a research laboratory for undergraduate students
All of these instruments aim to bring students enrolled in the program into a high-level international research network.
2 Master’s programs :
For admission to Master 1, applications must be submitted on the national "Mon Master" platform between February 26 and March 24, 2024.
For direct admission to Master 2 programs, applications can be submitted via ecandidat: https://ecandidat.uca.fr/.
